The emergency notification system is a computerized telephone calling system that will notify you in the event of an emergency such as a chemical release, sewer mishap or civil unrest. Recent examples of when the emergency notification system was activated include a water contamination problem and police activity due to a hostage situation. The following cities in the South Bay utilize the system: El Segundo, Hawthorne, Manhattan Beach, and Torrance.

The emergency notification system calls hundreds of numbers per minute to get the message out in a timely manner. If the system calls your home or business, you will receive a recorded message that will explain the situation and what actions you need to take, if necessary. When the situation is resolved an "all clear" message will be sent.

The emergency notification system computer will attempt three times to deliver the message. The message begins to play immediately when the phone is answered. If your phone is answered by an answering machine or voice mail you may only receive a partial message. Often, the message is repeated for this reason. However if you do not receive the entire message you should contact your local fire or police department for additional information.

VERY IMPORTANT: If your telephone number and/or address are not listed in the telephone book (such as an unlisted number), your phone number is not in the system. You must provide this information if you want to receive emergency notification messages. All information provided will be kept confidential and will only be used for this system. To opt into the emergency notification system, please download the emergency notification system flyer and mail the form as instructed to the El Segundo Fire Department.

If you have any questions about the emergency notification system, contact Steve Tsumura, El Segundo Fire Department, at (310) 524-2242.
